Starting at the toe, the toe cap has Jordan’s signature embossed. The side of the shoe features a stitched pattern that gives the shoes strength in addition to cosmetic effect. The tongue of the left and right are different for a first time with a jumpman logo on the right shoe and the number “23″ embedded on the left shoe. The shoe also features a glittery glossy panel that covers the midsole body of the sneaker. This was the first Air Jordan that was engineered to not use any glue.

According to an article in Jet magazine, the XX3/XXIII is the first basketball shoe to be made under the "Considered" ethos, meaning the shoe is made with the environment in mind. The shoe was constructed using the absolute minimum amount of adhesive to make it more environmentally sound, while the soles (which are designed from Jordan's own fingerprint) are made from recycled rubber. It is considered the most technologically advanced Jordan model to date, and according to Gentry Humphrey, the head of the Jordan design team, it may be the last actual Air Jordan.

GRAND SLAMMIN' WITH STAN SMITH

Does that bother you at all?
No, that’s just the way it is. I mean I’ll never forget giving a clinic to a bunch of 10-year-old kids. It was about two years after Borg retired. I said to them, ‘who wants to be the next Bjorn Borg?’ And they looked at me like I was nuts. So that was a quick realisation that that’s what happens. I wouldn’t expect young people to know who I am. Jack Kramer was in the same boat. I don’t know if you know who Jack Kramer was, but he was one of the great players of all time. He’s had a racquet out for 50 or 60 years now and although most people would not know who Jack Kramer is, they probably know the racquet. That’s just the way it is.

At this time not many athletes had their name on a shoe...
Yeah, I was one of the first. Of course there was the Chuck Taylor Converse. There’s also a Jack Purcell that had his name on it. Those were basketball shoes but even then the naming idea was not real big at the time. I also had my own clothing line with my name on it. Then about 10 years after the shoe first dropped, I started wearing the adidas Trefoil. I was involved in helping promote adidas in any way, not just on the tennis side of it.

And it still goes on today…
Yeah, still doing that. I’m going to Asia for the 60th anniversary of Soles and Stripes.

So this has been a mutually beneficial relationship for the two of you then?
Yeah! The shoe has sold really well in Japan and other cities in Asia plus in Europe – Italy, Spain and England. From my perspective, it’s a little bit like Federer said the other day, that he’s living the dream. I mean there’s no real reason why my name would ever be on a sneaker, but the shoe is a classic – it’s a clean-cut look and you can wear it with jeans or a tuxedo. And now the new Stan Smiths are coming out with all sorts of different colours and patterns. You can still see it’s the same basic shoe but it’s revamped. I picked up some of my shoes in Paris two years ago that were red with white polka dots, black with white polka dots, pink with white polka dots. I mean it’s crazy.

Ha, very nice! Fashion and style has come full circle now with less branding being put on shoes, they’ve stripped it all right back. With your shoe, there were no stripes, the trefoil was on the heel and your face was on the tongue tag. Was that a conscious move for adidas to go that way or was it just because tennis in this era had a much simpler aesthetic?
Bit of both... The perforations on the side were to help let your foot breathe. And in fact, I remember playing in heat, especially with intense humidity, and the shoe would get totally wet and the water would actually squirt out of those little holes. That was brutal to play in conditions like that. You know, Wimbledon also used my shoe and they put three green stripes on it. They put a herringbone bottom on the shoe because they would hold up better on the grass and they gave it to all the adidas players.

Did it still look like a Stan Smith?
It did except for the three stripes. And of course, when you looked at the bottom, it was completely different. That kind of sole was done for about 10 to 15 years before they changed the rule, which let you have studs coming from the bottom of the sole. Over a five-year period all the brands had to eventually create a shoe that had the same bottom on the shoe so that no one had any advantage on the court.

So what are you doing now? You’ve got your own tennis school?
Yeah, I’ve got this tennis academy. And I started a company called Stan Smith Events where we help corporations entertain their clients at major events, tennis events, golf events and the Olympics. And then we put together special weekends for a company to bring some of their top guests in. We have been doing that for about 12 or 13 years alongside working with adidas.

You’re a brand! It’s quite an empire.
Yeah. I also have a Stan Smith design company where we design tennis facilities. I’ve also got four kids who have all played tennis. The youngest one is a senior in college and she’s captain of her team. It’s the last time my wife and I will be seeing them play tennis at all which is sad in a way. We’ve been following their tennis careers since the oldest one was playing, he’s 30 now, so it’s been 20 years since they started.

Well I know it’s going to be hard, but if you could, can you pinpoint the biggest highlight of your career? There were many I’m sure…
Well, you know, winning Wimbledon was pretty cool. I lost to Newcombe in the finals in ’71 and beat Nastase in the finals in ’72, so that was, in my mind, like being the world champion to a certain extent. And even the Australians, they would say the same thing. Most Americans would say the same thing. Some of the Europeans would say the French over Wimbledon, but even when Nadal won Wimbledon he said that that was the tournament he really wanted to win even though he won the French four times! So that was a big one. Playing Davis Cup was another highlight – I was on seven winning teams, so it was pretty special. The one match we had in Bucharest against Nastase at the ’72 Davis Cup (11-9, 6-2, 6-3) was the most difficult competitive situation that I was ever in.

Shoe History Corner: Michael Jackson’s Shoes

In tribute to the late Michael Jackson, I figured a shoe history corner post would be appropriate because Jackson’s work was so legendary and really defined my generation’s music.

I remember growing up to Michael Jackson’s songs in the 80s. In fact, he was so popular that my grandmother, who lived with us at the time and didn’t speak much english, could even say “Billy Jean” and “Beat It”. One of my favorite MTV videos came from the hit “Smooth Criminal”. I remember thinking how cool Michael Jackson was when he defied gravity with his dancers in the 45 degree lean. Here’s a snapshot of this move and the music video.
How did Jackson achieve the lean? He patented special shoes which gave him the appearance of defying the normal laws of physics:

A system for allowing a shoe wearer to lean forwardly beyond his center of gravity by virtue of wearing a specially designed pair of shoes which will engage with a hitch member movably projectable through a stage surface. The shoes have a specially designed heel slot which can be detachably engaged with the hitch member by simply sliding the shoe wearer’s foot forward, thereby engaging with the hitch member.

Fuelled by paint fumes and a harmonious work ethic, Melb-born graffiti artists and lovers Dabs and Myla have teamed up to create an unstoppable force. Never a pair to knock heads when it comes to collaborating, this duo have packed their swag for the big smoke in ’09, relocating to the land of Disney. With year-round passes to the theme park strapped to their belts, the whole world is about to become their playground. Having recently worked alongside Fila and Teen Vogue (literally two days after landing in LA) the creators of Per Square Metre Gallery are about to takeover on a worldwide scale. We caught up with the perky pair to chew the fat and find out just how they stand working together ten hours a day, every day!

Hey guys, how has the move been from Melbourne to the sunny shores of LA?
Awesome, we really like it here a lot. We have been looking forward to the move for a while, and it’s been even better than we expected.

What was the decision to pack up and relocate for the next two years?
We have visited the States a few times in the last couple of years, and the last time we were here we were talking on the plane home about how much we both love L.A. and how we wish we could just stay for ages. So, by the time we got off the plane in Melbourne we had come to the decision that within the next eight months we were going to move. And here we are. No half steppin’ in the DABSMYLA team, I tells ya!

What goals do you have in mind while over in the US ?
This goes without saying - to paint on as much of the city as we can. We have a fair few projects ahead of us. We also have a lot of work lined up for group exhibitions, on top of a pretty big solo show later in the year. We are also planning to fly over to New York next month for a project, as well as going to Miami in December for Art Basel. We definitely will be keeping busy. Not to mention we also have year passes to Disneyland, so we can safely say there will be a lot of Disney days over the next 12 months. Myla can’t get enough of that place.

Is the Dabs and Myla story one of true love found through spray paint fumes? Tell us how you hooked up to create this unstoppable duo…
We actually met while we were both studying illustration at school. We became good friends over the two years we where studying and after time we inevitably fell in love. We were both into a similar style of illustration and painting. Not long after we got together I took Myla painting with me and showed her everything I knew about graff, which at the time wasn’t much. Being the genius that she is, it didn’t take long for her to master that shit.

When did you both start making the transition from walls and trains to gallery spaces?
About three years ago when we started up the Per Square Metre Gallery in Collingwood, along with Sear and another friend from school. To be honest, before that, neither of us really had dealings with the fine art world or exhibitions. But the four of us just threw ourselves right in to it. We all learnt so much about that side of the art world very quickly - it’s hard not to when you are running an art gallery.

Was there a specific time when art dealers started to really recognize your work as something that needed to be showcased?
For the first couple of years as exhibiting artists we never really showed much outside of our own gallery. No need to buy a cow when you get the milk for free. It’s only been in the last year that we have started to show outside of Per Square Metre, and outside of Australia. I guess people started to take more notice the more we developed our style.

How did it differ for you guys process-wise – having to be confined to acrylic woods and walls indoors, rather than on the streets?
No different really except that we had to deal with the fact that it was going to take a lot longer to paint with a brush on canvas than it would to paint a wall so in turn it taught us to be more patient.

You’ve described your style as ‘a balance between sweet and sour’ – can you embellish for us?
It’s based on the kind of people we are. Myla is super sweet and I’m.....well......not as sweet!

OK! Did you find that mastering your own personal styles on top of finding a complementing balance between the two of you difficult at all?
Not really, it just slowly happened after time. For a long time we where both doing our own thing and would occasionally do a collaboration together. But after years of working next to each other on separate work, we had already started to develop similar styles just from being so close. So when we decided to start working on all our pieces together it didn’t take long at all to find a nice balance.

You say you work pretty much ten hours out of any day, five days a week illustrating – how do you not get sick of each other?
You would think that we would! But, dead serious, we never do. We have never had a fight about anything (and never over the work). I guess we are both just too darn adorable to get sick of each other.

You guys must be pretty big into the sneaker scene too, having worked alongside adidas and Fila plus showcasing kicks in your art work – can you tell us more about working with the brands and just how you got into sneaker customising?
Working with Fila has been great. I love their style - they have a total retro feel going on. I must admit, I love a classic pair of tennis shoes. It’s really cool because we have always loved trying to place a nice pair of kicks into as many of our paintings as we can. Nothing tops off a painting like a great pair of shoes. And so reversing that by painting on a great pair of sneakers - forget about it! You can’t go wrong when the surface you’re painting on is already a dope piece of work in itself.

How about the Wango Tango Festival in Cali, where you guys worked alongside Fila to customise kicks for Teen Vogue? How did that all come about and how was the experience for you guys?
It was crazy. We were contacted by Fila just two days after we arrived here in the States. A good friend of ours (and amazing artist) Logan Hicks, put them in contact with us. I guess they spoke to him, and he said he knew some people who would be well suited to what they would want so he gave them our website to check out and they loved our work. We had a lot of fun at the festival and they where stoked with what we did with the shoes, so all round it was a pretty positive experience!

One of the must-have items of the season is, apparently, the good ol’ penny loafer. I’m all for that: school season is knocking on your neighborhood’s door, and even if you’re not in or around a school at the moment, you must feel the buzz of books and the studious energy in the air. No? It must be me, ahem; still, you are probably seeing a preview of collegiate fashions by now. And if you indulge one of my pet peeves for just a second: I for one would LOVE to see young women sporting an elegant, well-made penny loafer rather than a flip-flop way into November, as I often see, and which is just….wrong.
Penny loafers were named as such because they could be decorated with a penny (or often, a dime). I didn’t realize there was actually an urban legend behind this:
In 1934 John R. Bass (a bootmaker in Wilton, Maine) started making loafers and called them Weejuns (meant to sound like Norwegian). These had a strap across the upper part of the vamp that was shaped like a pair of lips (said to be John’s wife, Alice Bass, kissing each shoe on its way out the door). The mouth opening soon was used to hold an ornament (such as a penny), and thus penny loafers became a style. Penny loafers often held a dime instead of a penny. (From Wikipedia).

Good morning.

There was some excitement at my house last night.

Not ‘dinner party’ excitement.

Oh, no - more of a let’s find all of the oil lamps and play cards in the darkness kind of excitement.

It started with a short telephone call that we received from our neighbor as we were returning home from a quick jaunt to the grocery store. I was driving, so my hubby answered the phone. But, I still managed to hear the word ‘exploded’ float out from the receiver.
That, boys and girls, is what it looks like after your power pole explodes and your transformer catches fire..something to do with dry summers and freezing rain in the spring making these things into occasional tinderboxes. Good to know.

Here’s an obligatory close-up. I know it’s blurry, but note the hint of smoke as the wood still smolders:
So, what does this have to do with shoes?

Actually, very little.

But, since hubby did ask last night, “Well honey, how are you going to turn this into a Shoeblog post”.

The gauntlet was thrown.

Here goes:

I am fairly type-A about storing my shoes. I like to keep them in their boxes and then use 2×3 printer labels to put a stock-photo of the shoe on the end so I know what I have in my closet at a glance. But, last night, I realized there is another benefit to being a wee bit uptight about my shoe storage.

Keeping things organized prevents mismatching if you are rooting around in a dark closet for your matching shoes:

In the dark, all shoes are gray.

I’m not saying that I’ve done this, but I know there are folks out there who have. This is definitely one of the potential fashion pitfalls to be aware of when buying multiple colored pairs of a perfectly-fitted shoe.

Actually, I’m certain that I’ve inadvertently done this with socks. And, there was that time I ran to the closest ladies restroom stall to perform unexpected but necessary wardrobe repair; I abruptly realized that the shirt I was wearing was, in fact, inside out. *blushes*

So, how about any of you? Has anybody else had one of these unfortunate closet mishaps?
